David Lockwood, CEO and co-founder of Intense, has won the Ernst & Young Scottish Technology and Communications Entrepreneur Of The Year Award 2005.Intense is a global laser module company headquartered in Hamilton near Glasgow. Since January 2001 the company has secured over $50m of venture funding, established a world class III-V production facility, grown from four to 100 people and won major development and production contracts from European and US multi-nationals.
This growth has taken place while many other rival players in Intense’s sector have declined or gone out of business. David was the architect behind Intense’s strategic change of direction from telecommunications to printing.
Prior to founding Intense, David was Managing Director of BAE SYSTEMS (formerly Marconi) Sensor System division (SSD) for 3 years. SSD was the largest organisation of its type in Europe, and employed circa 2,500 people.
Outside Intense, David is a visiting professor at the University of Glasgow, a Chairman of Photonix Limited, a public sector III-V incubator facility, and is a board member of the Scottish Executive's 'High Technology Talent Board for Scotland'. David is a mathematician and chartered accountant, and has an MA in business studies.
Douglas Nisbet, managing partner for Ernst & Young in Scotland, said, "The success achieved by David Lockwood highlights the drive and determination of Scottish companies to succeed in today's challenging technology and communications market. His dedication and focused approach makes him a fitting role model for other indigenous businesses in this sector to follow and a worthy winner for Scotland."
David now has the opportunity to compete in the national awards to be held in London in October 2005.
